Lesson learnt

I wanted to make this announcement in my blogspot blog, but sadly it has to happen this way.

I have moved my Tamil and English blogs to my own website http://www.kparthas.com.
English blog is hosted here: http://blog.kparthas.com
Tamil blog is hosted here: http://tamil.kparthas.com (Tamil blog hasn't been setup properly yet).

Coming to the sad part, in the process of backing up my blog entries from my blogspot accounts (viz., kadalai.blogspot.com and www-kannan.blogspot.com) I had to setup the publish preferences of those blogs to FTP from blogspot hosting. The backup process went up smooth and the blog entries now are accessible under similar subdomains under kparthas.com but I didn't knew that my hold over the subdomains in blogspot would be released if i changed my publish option. And lo, blogger freed up my subdomains for fresh allocation.

Before I could recognize, my subdomain http://kadalai.blogspot.com was gone and I have lost all the connection I had with that name for the past one year.

And a new lesson has been learnt.

So if you were looking for my blog, you will have to come to the above mentioned domain, additionally the backup I had taken can be found here: http://kadalai.kparthas.com.

Major Upgrade

The newly added blogger bar doesn't go well with my template (and I'm kinda bored with it anyway). I'm thinking of giving my template a major upgrade.

What do you want, Bling?

Do you hear that "crack... crack..."?
That's my blog counter, it has been limping for quite sometime, unable to take the sudden surge in hits. Thanks to my post on Windows SP2 (most importantly my mentioning about bling.exe).
It is surprising to note that none of the major anti-virus co's have noticed the new trojan variant on the loose, bling.exe. I was struck when I tried to access some stupid(?) website, and sure bling.exe is a backdoor trojan. It attacks through one of those innumerable holes present in IE. (I simply wish that I could use my firefox all the time, but there are many morons out there who design their website only for IE).

Okay coming back to Bling.exe, I had deleted the bling.exe from my system32 directory and that seemed to have solved the problem (oh yeah and I have become more restraint in using IE). But this seems not a perfect solution for many, for them the problem still exists.
My 2 (well actually 4 :-) ) cents :

1. (Buy and) Install a good anti-virus
2. Check out this thread in Symantec's website
3. Checkout this article in PestPatrol and finally
4. Be careful while using IE (Patch it!!)

Snip snip ...... Hawwww

Somebody said to me that while getting haircut we lose energy and we'll feel sleepy. I sure would have believed that story today. I went to this "Macho" parlour (that's a name) and from the very second i landed there i felt cranky. May be it is due to the atmosphere there (That's one of those rare men's parlour without any photos/posters).

Obviously not interested in messing up my hair by submitting to sleep, I started exploring my ways to stay awake. I can't count sheeps, I know wher it will drag me. Then I thought, hey whi can't I count the "snips".

"Snip snip.....snip snip"

My barber is surely ambidexterous and i really struggled with the numbers as i had to count fast (It is hard to count when you have to do it twicw per second, especially when you are cranky. BTW kiruba says it is hard even otherwise). After exactly 641 snips and just over 12 minutes later my hair was done and then I noticed it, as usual my barber has screwed-up and I hadn't noticed it not because I was sleeping, but because I was busy counting.

I look exactly like a skinhead now.

Time travel with Windows XP SP2

Yeah baby it is fun! In the last four hours I have travelled back to 2002 (a.k.a Pre service pack era of windows XP), through the windows black-hole (Lucky me, Stephen Hawking just discovered that we indeed can get information from within black holes) and at the end of the four hour exciting journey Now I'm back to four hours before.

Okay before proceeding with the details of my journey, my two cents to anybody wishing to take such a journey into the world of Windows XP SP2:
1c. Fasten your seat belts.
2c. Have that shiny disk you bought for 7000 odd bucks(a.k.a Windows XP Professional Installation CD) ready.

Now to the exciting journey :

It all started with my valiant decision to turn down all the reviews about SP2 installation and proceed with one myself.

The half_an_hour_more_than_the_original_Install duration of SP2 didn't scare me at all (I had sneaked thru some of the reviews already). I realized that I'm on this exciting journey only when the first time freeze occured. My machine gave a blank stare at me for about 10 minutes,
forcing me to take that shiny little weapon (see my second cent). Suddenly I was taken back to the DOS days, with a command prompt (Windows recovery console) blinking at me, I failed to win the heart of XP, I was in the black-hole.

I had to take my next weapon, XP repair tool. Within an hour of jerky journey I landed in the pre service pack era of Windows XP. It took an hour more to get/verify the information from the black hole. (I should give the credits to guys @ M$ as I got my data back).Luckily I had XP SP1 with me, that helped me to get back to four hours before.

Now here I am blogging about my two cents.

Wait a minute I see a friend greeting me here....

"Your system will be shut down in 59 seconds"

"58 seconds.." "57 seconds"

Hey I know you, I remember the protocol, pressed Win+R and typed "shutdown /a". It is good to see an old friend, Sasser (only this time it is his cousin bling.exe)
My other ol' buddy, Norton too recognized him.

I love this (stinky) ol' world, no more SP2.

Yay!
